Crops under Threat From Drought: Expert

A drought which has afflicted some provinces will seriously affect crops country if it continues, a rice expert said on Tuesday.
Two weeks more drought could affect food security, said a press release form the Cambodian Center for Study and Development in Agriculture (CEDAC), an organization that envisions a Cambodian society where small farming households enjoy strong mutual cooperation, with the right and power to determine their own destiny, and play an important role in supplying healthy food for the whole society.
“Drought is a particular problem for Cambodia, as the proportion of land irrigated is among the lowest in the region,” the statement said. This year drought has affected thousands of hectares of rice paddy through out the country. By August, 2009, there were still 8 provinces country affected by drought: Kampong Thom, Takeo, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kandal, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, Pursat. The drough presents “a big challenge of rice farmers,” the statement stressed. CEDAC called for urgent technical measures to farmers and other stakeholders cope.
Yaing Saing Koma, CEDAC president, also offered advice on planting, plowing and fertilizer.
