HCM CITY — The Council for Development of Cambodia (CDC) is considering the application for an investment project proposed by a Vietnamese firm to build a huge fertiliser plant in the country, an economic consultant to the Vietnamese Embassy in Phnom Penh said last week.
The Viet Nam-based Five Star International Group unveiled in late August a plan to build a US$65 million natural fertiliser plant in Kandal Province’s Kien Svay District, some 20km to the east of Phnom Penh, said Le Bien Cuong.
If approved, the plant will be able to produce 350,000 tonnes of fertiliser per year.
"Construction of the new plant could start in October this year and be completed in 20 months," Cuong told the Phnom Penh Post.
Lim Sokun, secretary of state at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said the Cambodian authorities welcomed this investment project, which would help reduce reliance on imported fertiliser. He added Cambodia could supply 80 per cent of the materials for fertiliser production.
According to the ministry’s figures, Cambodia imports some 100,000 tonnes of fertilisers through 20 companies each year.
Yang Saing Koma, director of the Cambodian Centre for Agriculture Research and Development, said Cambodia needed millions of tonnes of natural fertiliser every year because nutrients had been depleted from most of the country’s soil as a result of long-term cultivation.
