AS Nigeria and other developing economies are on the verge of introducing social security schemes, the World Bank may have begun yet another round of equivocation if the latest report by the BrettingWoods Institution is anything to go by.
The report, "Doing Business 2010" launched yesterday by the World Bank has designated governments that provide social security for their citizens as "anti-business". Doing Business 2010 also recommends that countries should reduce severance pay for dismissed workers and reduce or eliminate requirements for prior notice about job cuts. However, it remains to be seen if the target countries will fall into the booby trap this time.
