PHNOM PENH — Cambodia's UN-backed war crimes tribunal on Wednesday dismissed a demand to disqualify the court's French investigating judge for bias, submitted last month by the lawyer for a Khmer Rouge leader. In its ruling the court, set up to try leaders of the late 1970s regime, said there was insufficient evidence that Marcel Lemonde told staff to favour evidence showing suspects' guilt over evidence of innocence.
"Judge Lemonde in his response states that he does not remember saying the words attributed to him, and that if he did say them it would only have been 'in jest, as would have been obvious to everyone present,'" the ruling said.
