COLUMBUS: The site of student protests at Kent State University on May 4, 1970, is one step closer to becoming a national historic landmark.
The Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board recommended Friday that the 17.24 acres in the center of the KSU campus be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It will now be up to the National Park Service to decide whether the designation is appropriate, according to Kim Schuette, of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.
Schuette said a decision is expected within 90 days.
''The listing is an educational and planning tool,'' she said.
Four students died and nine were wounded there when Ohio National Guardsmen fired into a crowd of people who were protesting the U.S. invasion of Cambodia or were watching the protest.
