The offer by Privy Councillor Surayud Chulanont to help mediate a political truce has met with mainly indifference from the country's two main antagonists.
Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday cautiously welcomed the offer by Gen Surayud to mediate talks with the government to end their long-standing feud.
But Thaksin questioned whether the idea was the privy councillor's own initiative.
"Having listened to what Gen Surayud said, I wonder whether it was his own idea or was he being dictated to take that step," the former premier said on his Twitter internet page from Phnom Penh. He did not elaborate.
Thaksin stressed the need for all parties to enter the talks with an open mind.
"It takes two to tango," he said.
