Phnom Penh - Thailand's fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra arrived in Phnom Penh on his third trip to the kingdom since being named an adviser to its government, a government spokesman said Thursday as relations between the two countries worsen. Khieu Kanharith, the minister of information, said the purpose of Thaksin's visit was to impart economic advice to the administration.
Thaksin arrived Wednesday after his appointment in October put further strains on the already tense relations between the two neighbours.
Khieu Kanharith said he did not know whether Thaksin planned to meet with members of Puea Thai, the opposition political party in Thailand with which he is linked. On his previous visits, Thaksin met with his political supporters from Thailand, who have vowed to escalate anti-government protests there.
