After lodging her appeal one day after the Phnom Penh Court found her guilty of defaming Prime Minister Hun Sen on 4th August, Ms. Mu Sochua had been summoned by the Appeal Court to hear her appeal on 18th August.
However, Ms. Mu Sochua, who is a deputy secretary-general of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), is currently visiting the United States and is not due to return until 20th August.
Mr. Mu Sochua has reportedly written a letter to the Appeal Court requesting for her hearing to be postponed because she is currently staying in America for medical treatments until 20th August. It is not clear if the court had accepted her request.
Mr. Yim Sovan. spokesman for the SRP, said he is not hopeful that the Appeal Court will find justice for Mu Sochua because the court only does what the ruling party ordered it to do.
"Even if we don't have any hope, we want to show the people the way the court operates in Cambodia", he said.
