Mrs. Ke Sovannaroth, Secretary-General of the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), said the party will pay fines on behalf of Ms. Mu Sochua if the court found her guilty of defaming Prime Minister Hun Sen in a verdict to be delivered on 4 August.
Ms Mu Sochua sued Mr. Hun Sen for defamation and was being counter-sued for the same offence. Her lawsuit has been dismissed by the court for no clear reason. She was, along with Mr. Ho Vann, stripped of her parliamentary immunity.
Ms. Ke Sovannaroth said the party had received more than enough donations from people who are sympathetic with Ms. Mu Sochua's plight.
Mr. Sam Rainsy, SRP president, recently said that the SRP will take a more reconciliatory and soft approach to its criticism of the government, in place of its confrontational approaches in the past. He also said the SRP will not appeal the court's decision even if Mu Sochua is found guilty because, he said, it is a waste of time trying to fight in a government-controlled court.
Mr. Phay Siphan, spokesman for the Council of Minister, said Cambodia is a state of law, therefore all its citizens must seek justice through the judicial system that is indepedent.
