PM Hun Xen said that he is determined to fight against trafficking of women and children, and he will use 2010 as the year to lead a campaign to destroy brothels and illegal gambling parlors. During the celebration of the 99th anniversary of the 08 March International Women’s Day which was held in the morning of 04 March at the Phnom Penh Royal University, Hun Xen said that the problem of children and women trafficking is still taking place because leeches in the society are sucking women and children’s blood through the sex industry and brothels disguised of nightclubs, karaoke parlors and massage parlors. Hun Xen reminded that, in 2000, he issued an order to close all karaoke parlors once already, but he was criticized that this closing led joblessness for a number of women. However, [he said that his critics] forget that in karaoke parlors, first of all, they permanently need young and pretty women there, older women are shed off and younger women are brought in to replace them. This means that women are still being trafficked, taken advantage of from one generation to the next, and when will this end when the number is always on the rise?
