BANGKOK—Thaksin Shinawatra was a flamboyant but divisive prime minister, backed by vast riches that he has used to loom large over Thailand's political scene despite being ousted in a 2006 coup.
The fugitive 60-year-old has been accused of bankrolling and masterminding political violence that has left 88 people dead since anti-government "Red Shirt" street rallies began in Bangkok in March.
Thailand's criminal court on Tuesday issued a warrant for Thaksin's arrest on terrorism charges in connection with the mass rallies, which ended with a bloody army crackdown last week.
