LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Longtime Bears team photographer Bill Smith has captured some amazing images on the football field. But none changed his life like what he witnessed during a 2002 trip to Cambodia.
Smith and his wife, Lauren, saw hundreds of underprivileged adults and children knee deep in filth scavenging through a garbage dump, a job they later learned paid about $10 month.
“All the kids were half-dressed, barefoot or wearing shoes that were 10 sizes too big that they found at the dump,” said Smith, who is also the team photographer for the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks.
