About 18 former residents of Borei Keila, two of whom were young children, decided to jump over the fence at the Prey Speu detention center at about 11AM on Wednesday 18 January.
These residents were detained by the Phnom Penh authority for the past week after they protested against their forced eviction from Borei Keila.
Their decision to escape took place after SRP MP Mu Sochua intervened with Van Ngat, the director of Prey Speu detention center, to have the 30 residents released. However, Van Ngat refused to let them go.
The residents indicated that they names are not officially registered at the Prey Speu detention center and they had waited to see the result of negotiations with the Phan Imex, but it was a futile wait.
Nevertheless, their decision to escape did not meet with any action from the security guards at the detention center, nor did they meet any problem from the local authority.
