Ms. Mu Sochua vs. Mr. Hun Sen.Reported in Khmer by Khmerization
Prime Minister Hun Sen warned "a certain woman" not push him too hard against the walls, in a speech seen as directed at Mu Sochua. He also said his recent win against Ms. Mu Sochua in a defamation case is a real justice because he is not the first to instigate the lawsuit, but he was sued by Ms. Mu Sochua first.
Speaking in a graduation ceremony to students at the Institute of Laws and Economics on 12th August, Mr. Hun Sen said he will entertain Ms Mu Sochua to the bitter end, either through legal, political or military means. He said: "(You) are not Aung San Suu Kyi, you don't have any hope. Now I just said like this, please sue me if you want. If you sue me again, I will counter sue again. It is really lucky that I used court (to settle the dispute) because it (Sochua's suit) really afftected my reputation, but I don't use my powers (to settle the dispute). I am a prime minister but I'd rather use court and the military would rather use the court (to settle their dispute) too. If they don't use the court, do you rather want them to instead use the guns? Please be clear: if I give orders (to the military), in two hours Phnom Penh will be completely taken over. Please try if you want. If I use dictatorial powers, no one can run anywhere, I can detain everybody."
Mr. Hun Sen said all politicians should compete against each other in the developments of the country instead.
Mr. Sam Rainsy, president of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, said the Cambodian courts are only used as the tools of the current leaders, they are not there to render justice to the Cambodian people. He said he agrees with Mr. Hun Sen's last sentence.
Mr. Sam Rainsy said: "His last sentence is very appropriate that if we want to win against each other, we should try to win in term of developments. We should gather all the people's ideas to see whose ideas are better for the developments of the countries and to improve the lives of the people."
Mr. Chan Saveth, human rights investigator for the human right group ADHOC said Mr. Hun Sen's comments are worrisome because they are involved a show off and the flexing of his powers.
He said: "For the use of military powers in Cambodia, I don't think that anyone in Cambodia has weapons or armed forces to use, they only have legal means to use. So what I have noticed is that the Prime Minister's speech has caused great concerns that even if you want to sue and to appeal all you like, you will have no chance to win against him."
Mr. Hun Sen's speech was seen as directed at Ms. Mu Sochua who lost a defamation suit against him, but had indicated that she will fight until she gets justice.
Mr. Chan Soveth insists the case between Mu Sochua and Mr. Hun Sen must be settled through peaceful means.
