Stung Treng Province Electricity Dam Could Have Severe Impact

Vietnamese Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 1(PECC1) and Key Consulting Cambodia Company cooperated with Cambodian government plan to build a new US$ 816 million hydro-electricity dam in Stung Treng province. Both sides have now finished their environmental impact assessment, an official said. Building is slated it finish in 2015. The new hydropower dam is in Se San district but could impact 9 villages nearby. The project will flood 30,000 ha with a dam 75 meters high, an environment officer said on Saturday.
Cambodian Programmer Manager of Environmental Cambodian Forum Organization Ton Kunthel said “For the planning to build the Se San Krom II at Phluk village, Phluk commune, Se San district of Stung Treng province, it will start to build in early 2010 and finish in 2015.” “It maybe caused to the security of the 9 villagers are living nearer such as Sre Kor I, Sre Kor II, Sre Sdok, Kbal Romeas, Kbal Spean Srepak, Krabey Chhrum, Khsach Thmey, Svay Rieng, Rom Poat villages.”
Flood could affect people aroung National Highway 13 from Strung Treng to Ratanakiri provinces, “so it is a serious concern for the people living there.”
