PM to visit Cambodia Friday

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will make an official visit to Cambodia on Friday for bilateral talks, including discussions on the continuing border dispute near Preah Vihear temple and the sea border in the Gulf of Thailand.

It will be hisd first trip to Cambodia since taking office in December.

Mr Abhisit said on Thursday he had to cancel his planned visit to Cambodia on April 18 because of the anti-government riots in Bangkok.

He will meet Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to discuss expansion of bilateral cooperation, such as the construction of roads connecting the two countries, the development of water resources, electricity sales and tourism promotion.

Thailand will offer low-interest loans to Cambodia, and will return seven Khmer artifacts smuggled into Thailand by thieves about 10 years ago and later seized by police, he said.

Mr Abhisit said he will also meet Thai businessmen in Phnom Penh to discuss their problems and try and help them if possible.

About 100 pro-government journalists and government officials are expected to hold a rally on Monday to commemorate the 47th anniversary of the World Court ruling handing Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia. The rally has been organised by Soy Sopheap, CTN host and publisher of Deum Ampil newspaper.

Preah Vihear: New steel stairway for Phnom Trop

RCAF soldiers have finished building a steel stairway up Preah Vihear province's Trop mountain, signalling the end of a project entirely funded by one army officer.

"Construction of the stairs has finished, and some people have already climbed them to the top of the mountain," Yim Phim, commander of Brigade 8, said Sunday. He said that the construction of the 310-metre-long stairway was funded entirely by RCAF General Keo Pong and cost US$20,000.

"It is interesting to climb this mountain because you can view the area surrounding [Preah Vihear] temple. I believe more people will visit the mountain when armed confrontation between Cambodian and Thai soldiers stops and security is assured for them," Yim Phim said.

Trop mountain is located about 2 kilometres from Preah Vihear temple. Phorn Eung, military officer in Brigade 8, said Sunday that soldiers at the border were facing harsher conditions since the wet season began. "The situation is normal at the front line, but soldiers are facing malaria right now because it is the rainy season," Phorn Eung said.

Thai tanks and armoured personnel carriers which pushed into Khmer territories at Chak Chreng nearly cause an armed clash

A serious border violation by Thai tanks and armoured personnel carriers at Chak Chreng border point almost lead to an armed clash between Khmer and Thai troops based at the areas, reports Deum Ampil.

Cambodian military sources told Deum Ampil on 6th June that the day before the Thai military had sent tanks and armoured personnel carriers equipped with heavy weaponry to the borderlines. They then attempted to push into Cambodian territory but were met with strong warnings and resistance from the Cambodian troops based in the area.

Renewed border tensions at Chak Chreng had caused a near eruption of fighting at Chaim Sra-Ngam on the 6th of June when a group of 30 Thai troops crossed the border to occupy a plot of lands inside Cambodian territory.

Chak Chreng area became a new flashpoint of renewed border tensions between the two countries when a group of 30 Thai troops occpied the areas about a month ago. According to Cambodian military source, the Thai military reinforced their troop numbers by sending 100 soldiers to the areas in four military trucks, escorted by tanks and armoured personnel carriers which equipped with heavy weaponry.

Maj. Pha Choeun, Cambodian commander of Chak Chreng areas, said the near eruption of armed fighting was caused by unusual Thai troop movements with tanks and armoured personnel carriers trying to force their ways into Khmer territories. The Cambodian troops resisted and stopped them by strongly warning them to retreat. They then stropped the push and made a contact to their superiors who then contacted the Cambodian commanders.

After the talks, at around 2 oclock in the afternoon, they withdrew. They said that the tanks and armoured personnel carriers were escorting their commander, Gen. Sethadee, to inspect the areas. The Cambodian military sources doubt the veracity of the Thai version of event because of the numbers of new troops and heavy weaponry sent to the areas.

The Cambodian military said that Chak Chreng, the same as Phnom Trop and Veal Entry, is a strategic position. It sits 600 metres high on top of the Dangrek Mountain ranges. The Cambodian military said that if the Thai controlled Chak Chreng they then can use it as a lunch pad to occupy other spots in the areas. They also said that if the Thai controlled Phnom Trop and Veal Entry they will then control access road to the Preah Vihear temple and will eventually control the temple in the future.
